Re: Crawley Town!

Crawley 6 points clear with 4 games in hand over the Wombles and 11 points clear of Luton!

Sorry for the break, I had computer problems.

Last night (Tues) saw Crawley come back from an early 2nd minute shock when Hayes & Yeading went ahead. Crawley 5 Hayes & Yeading 2.

Saturday saw The Reds take the points at an away match against Fleetwood Town. Fleetwood 1 Crawley 2. Keeper Michael Kuipers was stretchered off just before half-time with a thigh injury. Substitute keeper Scott Shearer replaced him and put in a very good appearance. There was some concern that Kuipers could be out for some time and Crawley immediately recalled third keeper Nick Jordan from his loan to Weymouth just in case. The good news is that Kuipers is now expected to be unfit for only 2-3 weeks.

Matt Tubbs continues to knock them in and is well clear as the leagues top scorer adding a brace yesterday. To date he has scored 29 league goals this season, far ahead of the next players on 20.

This Friday sees Crawley host Wimbledon, in what has been described as a pivotal tie where the league would be decided. Indeed, three points would see Crawley stretch the lead to 9 points. A full house is virtually guaranteed in this all-ticket clash. But Wimbledon will really want the points after their recent wobbles and to try to salvage their season. This should be a thrilling match. I shall be listening to the match live on the BBC radio Sussex/Surrey Iplayer and, no doubt, there will be a few nail biting moments!

Crawley increase their lead to 9 points over Wimbledon and 14 over Luton!

On Friday, Crawley beat Wimbledon 3-1 at the Broadfield. Early goals from Matt Tubbs (his 30th league goal this season) and defender Kyle McFadzean saw The Reds take a commanding lead. On 38 minutes Wimbledon pulled one back. Shortly before half-time, Dannie Bulman was shown a straight red card for a professional foul leaving Crawley with only 10 men for the rest of the game.

The second half saw the Reds under considerable pressure as Wimbledon tried to capitalise on their man advantage, but in the end substitute James Dance hit a cracking shot to ease the pressure and score his first goal for the Reds. Well done James - let's hope it's the first of many.

It's too early to start celebrating as it is still mathematically possible for Crawley to lose the title, but in an unprecedented move Blue Square betting are offering to pay-out on Crawley which should, at least, be encouraging!

Crawley travel to what could be a tough test at strugglers Eastbourne on Tuesday. Eastbourne will throw everything at Crawley in their attempt to avoid relegation and have seen a revival of form recently. Another exciting match on the cards!

Sad News.

Director Bruce Winfield died on Monday at St. Catherines Hospice from cancer. Bruce was instrumental in saving the club from administration and he put a lot of his personal wealth into the club as well as arranging outside investment into the club. A long time CTFC supporter, Bruce became "Mr Crawley Town".

His death at the early age of 60 is a cruel blow, just as Crawley prepare for promotion and unchartered waters in the league next season.

R.I.P. Bruce - you will never be forgotten.

Eastbourne Borough 1 - Crawley Town 2

Crawley increased the lead to 12 points as they swept up the points. A closer game than many expected as Crawley played an Eastbourne side who don't want to be relegated, in the Sussex derby. Goals from Charlie Wassmer (25) and Sergio Torres (57) secured the points.

Nice to see new signing Charlie Wassmer on the score sheet for his first goal for the club.

This match was played under a cloud, after the news of Bruce Winfield's death - a one-minute period of silence was observed before the kick off.

Crawley travel up north on Saturday to face 14th place Gateshead whilst Luton travel to lowly Southport, 20th and the Wombles play at home to eighth place Rushden & Diamonds who are in good form recently and want to get into the play offs.

Time to catch up. Sorry been away from the computer for a few days doing healthy things like walking to a café for a gut-busting breakfast :?

Crawley had a tough game up at Gateshead on a "bobbly pitch" and two disallowed goals to earn a 0-0 draw so not too much to report there but all the same, a valuable point. The major bad point was an ankle injury to captain Pablo Mills who is expected to be fit again soon. The best news was Luton's 2-1 defeat at Southport.

Tuesday saw The Reds beat Mansfield at the Broadfield 2-0 from goals by McFadzean (13) and Tubbs (82) although pundits say it should have been a much wider margin, whilst Luton could only scrape a 0-0 draw at home to Barrow.

So where does all this leave The Reds and " Project Promotion" ?

A few back of envelope calculations suggest that Crawley need only 11 points from their remaining 8 games to be promoted, regardless of what results other teams in contention actually achieve. In more detail - six more points for Crawley would see Wimbledon out of the running, the 11 points would eliminate Luton and anyone else and 2 points are enough to see off Wrexham! Of course this is based on the remaining other teams in contention actually winning all their games so Crawley could well be promoted sooner. 11 points from a possible 24 is still a challenge but one I feel Crawley will rise to and achieve comfortably.

Saturday sees the Reds host Darlington who in 8th place do pose a threat but the Crawley crowd and the way that Crawley are playing with plenty in reserve, will win the day - I hope.

So, even louder, COME ON YOU REDS!

Crawley 1 Darlington 0

Crawley had several opportunities in the first half but the ball stayed out of the net until the 67th minute when Ben Smith drove home from 25 yards. Several more chances followed, one with Tubbs hitting the post from a header. Darlington nearly gave Crawley a scare when Dan Burn headed over. This was the closest The Quakers came to scoring in a game that was nearly all Crawley.

This win over Darlington along with the win over Mansfield on Tuesday means that The Reds have beaten both the FA Trophy finalists in the space of a week. No prizes for this though!

The Reds edge quite a bit closer to promotion as Luton were held to a 3-3 draw at Kidderminster. The late Kidderminster equaliser might have changed both team's fortunes, as Kidderminster remain in contention for the play-offs, whilst the loss of 2 points has damaged any hope Luton have of being champions! Elsewhere Wimbledon had a comfortable 2-0 win over Barrow and Wrexham said bye-bye to their champions challenge as they went down 0-2 at home to Hayes & Yeading!

So, some more back of envelope calculations needed as everything has changed.

The Reds now only need to win two games, or get six points from their remaining seven games to be champions and automatic promotion.
The Reds need one win or three points to eliminate Wimbledon.

This Tuesday Crawley have a tough away game at York. The two teams haven't met so far this season but York are in good form in 7th place. Luton have on paper an easier task at home to 14th placed Kettering.

If Crawley win and Luton lose on Tuesday it's game-over and Crawley are champions. Exciting times!!

So once again but even louder than last time - COME ON YOU REDS!

Not quite there yet...

York 1 Crawley 1.

The Reds faced a tough, physical, York side and found themselves a goal down after 16 minutes. Steve Evans had some stern words for his players during the break and this must have had some effect as Sergio Torres hit the equaliser early in the 2nd half. All in all, a point from this meeting was a fair result - it was expected to be tough.

Luton failed to cash in on Crawley's loss of two points as they also ended up with a draw at home to Kettering Town.

So with Luton losing points, Crawley are just 3 points away from the title and, of course, automatic promotion :D

To quote Steve Evans ;- “We can smell the champagne but as of now we cannot drink it".

Crawley travel to Tamworth on Saturday, for what could be the deciding match.

So, at the top of our voices COME ON YOU REDS!
