The Parish of Goring is recorded in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 under the name Garringes, meaning 'place of Gara's people'. The name Goring also means 'people of the wedge-shaped-land'. Its first community began in Anglo Saxon times. It became Goring By Sea in 1908 so as not to confuse it with Goring on Thames in Oxfordshire.
Rock star Billy Idol (William Broad) spent his childhood here and Peter Townsend of the 'Who' recorded the beach sound for his album 'Quadrophenia' on Goring beach, which is made up of pebbles, shingle, and sand at low tide.
We had a lovely time in Goring By Sea. We got there about 11 am. Free parking (oh yes, I kid you not) next to the large beach front cafe, which serves eat in, or out (in a sort of very big open air tent) or takeaway food, and are open 7 days a week, with mens and ladies toilets behind the cafe, also free. There are benches for you to sit on (you could pack a picnic), sprawled all along the seafront on the beach, facing the sea, many with departed loved ones names upon them. Dogs and their owners are everywhere, and Molly behaved herself really well and didn't fearbark at anybody. The weather changed by the minute, which was great. And, bonus, no arcades, no nothing, Just the cafe. Awesome. xx Also, I forgot to mention the windfarm, which, if you peer at the horizon, you will just about see. But not in these photos.
You will have to go there. xx
