mzawf sponsors actionaid

Postby Nevis » Thu Feb 16, 2012 6:40 pm

We have thought long and hard about supporting a good cause. :scratch
There are so many causes. Poverty, overseas aid, the homeless ...... the list goes on.
So we had a long talk and decided that there was really only one option for us, and that was actionaid.

An actionaid support worker, returning from overseas, remarked "If only people realised how hard it is for some people in the world just to survive each day.
In Africa, a starving child can be fed for as little as a pound a week".
Makes me personally feel ashamed of how much I spend on cigarettes and wine each week. :thumbsdown
So, we look forward to receiving the photo of our sponsored child soon.
All we know is that she or he lives in Africa, but we'll keep you updated as to what's going on, and how they are doing. :mz :kiss

We have just recieved our sponsor details back from actionaid and we have been selected to sponsor a little girl :kiss
Her name is Ramatu and she lives in Kogi, a state south of Nigeria's capital city, Abuja.

http://www.kogistatenigeria.org/

Ramatu was born in 2006, and she is one of a family of 2 children. Ramatu speaks Igala; one of the main languages of this area. English is the official language of Nigeria.
Her family are of Muslim faith. Most families are either Christian or Muslim, with a small number following local and traditional beliefs.

Ramatu lives in a home constructed from mud walls with a zinc roof. This is the most common type of house type in Kogi. Houses are often comprised of two rooms, with the cooking done outside. Men are reponsible for building the home, with the women and children helping.
There are no well equipped health facilitis in villages of Kogi. Pregnant women rely on the support of untrained traditional birth attendants, and are only referred to far-away health centres in the case of emergencies. Because most children are born at home, birth records are not kept. There is a naming celebration on the seventh day after a child is born, but subsequent birthdays are not celebrated.

Accessing safe, clean water is a problem in Kogi. Women and children often have to trek over 4km to collect water as part of their household chores. Few houses have hand-dug wells, which provide limited water for washing and irrigation.
